An Interview with Bilbo Baggins the day after he returned from his adventure.
1. What are your biggest hopes and dreams? Why? Bilbo: My biggest hopes and dreams as of right now is to stay right here, safe in my little hobbit hole. Although I feel like I will want to go on another adventure in a few decades from now. 2. What are your greatest fears? Why? Bilbo: Dying, Injuries, pretty much anything involving infliction. Why, because I am a hobbit. The greatest pain we might feel is touching a hot stove by accident. 3. What is the most traumatic experience you've had? Explain. Bilbo: The adventure I just returned from, that was an absolutely terrifying and traumatizing experience. In that adventure, the most traumatizing part was sneaking around the treasury in the Lonely Mountain and talking with Smaug. 4. How well would you say you cope with stressful situations? Bilbo: Oh I don't know, I think I handle stressful situations the best out of the hobbits in the Shire, however, I think the dwarves and others would say I handle them the terribly. 5. Who do you turn to when you need help? Bilbo: Well hopefully I will never be in a situation where I need again. However, if were to ever need help now, I would turn to the magic ring I found. It saved my life multiple times during the adventure and is probably the only reason I am alive now. Besides the ring, I turned to the help of Gandalf and the dwarves. 6. What makes you nervous or worried? Why? Bilbo: I used to be scared of anything out of the ordinary. However, my courage has strengthened since the adventure so I think that the only thing that would make me nervous is my old aunt Lisa during family reunions. 7. Are you hiding anything from your friends and family? If so, what? (Bilbo pulled out a small golden ring) Bilbo: Oh well I told the dwarves about this ring already, but I never told Gandalf about this. And don't you tell anyone about this magical power. 8. How do you feel about yourself? Why? Bilbo: I am feel good about myself, I don't want to sound arrogant or boastful or anything but I feel like I have a good heart and want the best for others. I have never killed anyone, however, I did kill those spiders... but I don't think that counts. I am not consumed by greed or power, and there have been plenty of times to test that. Sure I had a few close calls with the ring, but I was never fully consumed and I would give it up if it corrupted me. 9. How do you feel about your life situation? Why? Bilbo: I don't believe I have a life situation, everything has been splendid. I learned so much from the wonderful adventure with new knowledge, courage, treasure, and a magic ring. I live in a great home and can' t really recollect a life situation. 10. How do you feel about life in general? Explain. Bilbo: My life in general has been the best a Baggins could ever deserve. I have gone on an adventure of a life time and made the greatest of friends. I live in a cozy home, living a lifestyle that I love. I am pretty lucky. Based on your findings, how would you assess the character's emotional state? The main character, Bilbo Baggins, is a dynamic character, Bilbo was once a shy and timid hobbit, and feared an adventure has now developed into a courageous once he ventured out on his first adventure. What type of intervention strategies, if any, would you suggest for this character? I don't think there are any intervention strategies I can suggest. Bilbo has already changed into what he would become if I suggested and changes. He conquered his fears by doing what he feared. He developed his courage and no longer needs my help.

Write about the decisions you would make if you were the main character in the book. Please complete this writing prompt in 2-3 paragraphs.
If I was the main character bilbo Baggins, in the book, The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien, I would make different decisions. However, many of the decisions that I would have changed, were decisions that Bilbo made when he was still in a fearful state. Once Bilbo discovered his courage, I for the most part, agreed with the decisions he made. If I were Bilbo Baggins I would have not been so timid when it came to the adventure in the first place, I would have been right next to the dwarves ready for action. Such as when they were escaping the goblins, they had to carry bilbo. I would have made sure that I was right next to Thorin up in the front, no matter the physical hindrances. I also would have not made complaints to be back in my hobbit hole. Bilbo’s complaints and burden to the dwarves would have not occurred if I were to be the main character. Once Bilbo gained his courage he made decisions that I would have made, and even a decision that I might have had one of the dwarves do. His bravery facing the spiders of Mirkwood and his brilliant plan of helping the escape were decisions that I would have made too, if I could have even thought of them. I don’t think I would have had the courage to go and talk to the dragon Smaug, I would have had one of the dwarves go. Besides that, I agreed and would have also made the decision to take the arkenstone to save Thorin from his greed over the treasure. Finally, the only different decision that I would have made that Bilbo didn’t do, was use the ring to assist in fighting the Battle of the Five Armies rather than just sitting there and watching the battle while I still had the ring on. Present a case for why your book should replace one of the classical novels usually read in English Classes. Or you may make a case that is should not be taught in classrooms and read only for pleasure.
I believe that The Hobbit, written by J.R.R Tolkien, should be read in English classes. The Hobbit is a well-written story, filled with multiple climaxes, well-written literature, space for deeper thinking, a good plot line, and visible values for good morals, so The Hobbit fits the criteria for an in-class book. The Hobbit is also an enjoyable story, thus, it makes analyzing and other tasks that would be required in English class, less burdensome. The Hobbit also provides a story that displays a value for good morals. It implements a vivid image of the effects of greed and corruption caused by wealth, along with the encouragement to the readers to be more courageous and adventurous. In conclusion, although, it would be difficult for students to not read ahead, The Hobbit provides an enjoyable story that meets the criteria of English, along with teaching for courage, and good morals, thus making The Hobbit the perfect book to read in English. Write ten questions that could be used to start a discussion about the book. Or, write ten questions that test other students' understanding of the story. Make sure you provide a list of answers.
1. What is a Hobbit? Answer: Hobbits are little people, smaller than Dwarves. They love peace and quiet. They dislike any form of adventure and prefer to stay in their little cozy hobbit holes. They are prone to be fat as they love to eat (six meals a day) and drink. They wear bright colors and do not wear shoes. They have large feet with leathery soles and thick hair on top. 2. What does the ring Bilbo posses do? Answer: The golden ring Bilbo discovered and stole is a powerful ring that turns it's owner invisible when worn. It is a very powerful asset that assisted Bilbo in his adventure. 3. Who was Thorin? Answer: Thorin was the king of the Dwarves until he died. Thorin was also the leader of Thorin & Company (the crew of dwarves and Bilbo). 4. What is the Arkenstone? Answer: The Arkenstone is a precious jewel that came from the heart of the lonely mountain. It is a bright shining jewel that appears to take the light shone upon it and turn it into ten thousand sparks of white radiance shot with glints of the rainbow. Thorin believes it is worth more than a river of gold. 5. Why does Gandalf keep abandoning the group? Answer: Gandalf leaves the group three time for decently long periods of time during the journey. The first time was to scout out the path ahead, the second time was to track bear tracks, the third time was to go to a great council of the white wizards, masters of lore and good magic, where they drove the Necromancer from his hold in the south of Mirkwood. 6. Who is Beorn? Answer: Beorn is a skin-changer that assisted Gandalf, the Dwarves, and Bilbo when they became starving on their journey. Beorn can turn into an enormously large bear. Beorn also was a major contribution in the Battle of Five Armies where he killed many Goblins and Wargs. 7. Who were Fili and Kili? Answer: Fili and Kili are two brother dwarves and are members of Thorin & Company. They were Thorin's nephews and heir to the throne until they both died fighting to defend Thorin. 8. Why are the Goblins and Wargs pursuing the adventurers? Answer: The Goblins and Wargs are pursuing the adventurers because they killed the Great Goblin. The Goblins and devilish wolves, the Wargs, help each other in their evil deeds. 9. Who is Bard? Answer: Bard is the descendant of Girion, Lord of Dale. Bard is also the slayer of the dragon Smaug. Bard was also a commander of the Men (normal human) army in the Battle of Five Armies. Bard after the battle then rebuilt Dale where men from the lake and from south and west followed him. 10. What was the Battle of Five Armies? Answer: The Battle of Five Armies was a great and catastrophic battle with an abundance of casualties between the goblins, Wargs, elves, dwarves, and men. The battle thinned out the goblin empire. Among the casualties were Thorin, Fili, and Kili. Describe in detail three characters from the story. List reasons why you would or wouldn't want to get to know these individuals. This should be written in two or three paragraphs.
Bilbo Baggins Bilbo Baggins the Hobbit is the main protagonist of the story. As a hobbit, he is inclined to despise adventures and desire to peacefully live in his hobbit hole. Bilbo, hired as a burglar for the adventure to the lonely mountain was a liability at the beginning of the adventure. However, he became an asset once he found his courage and a powerful golden ring which turns it's owner invincible when worn. With Bilbo's new ring, he gained confidence and courage that never would have been even imaginable to be seen in a Hobbit. That confidence and courage combined with the ring ultimately saved the dwarves multiple times. I would want to get to know Bilbo, due to his friendliness, kindness, politeness, and because he is the owner of the ring. Gandalf Gandalf is a wise wizard that accompanies the Dwarves and Bilbo throughout their adventure. Gandalf is a very wise wizard as he proves to be throughout the novel. Gandalf saved the adventurers twice from death. Without Gandalf, the adventurers would not have gone very far in their journey, as Gandalf also provided assistance via his abundance of connections and his wise tactics to gaining assistance. I would want to get to know Gandalf for he is a very wise and powerful wizard whose usefulness in the adventure is greatest. Thorin Oakenshield Thorin Oakenshield is the new king of the dwarves. He is the leader of the expedition to the lonely mountain. Thorin son of Thrain, son of Thror, King under the mountain (Lonely Mountain), is brave and has excellent leadership qualities. However, he, like his fathers have a lust for treasure especially the precious Arkenstone. Once he arrived at the Lonely Mountain, this lust and greed for treasure took the best of him and caused him to make some poor leadership choices. However, at the end of the story, Thorin died in battle as he once again proved himself a terrific and brave leader. I would want to get to know Thorin due to his bravery and his excellent leadership. However, I would not want to know him if he was ever involved in his treasure. Choose two characters from the story and write a conversation they might have. This should be a minimum of two paragraphs.
Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf in the time spent in Rivendell, Bilbo comes across Gandalf sitting among the elf palace smoking his pipe. "Good morning Gandalf!" Bilbo greeted with a smile. "What do you mean this time, do you wish me a good morning today or do -" "All of them at once!" Bilbo hurriedly said. Gandalf's eyes lightened and his lips curled behind his pipe in the midst of blowing a smoke ring. "Well, what is it you want? Surely you did not come solely to greet me." Bilbo could not deny this and began his inquiry, "I wanted to know why you choose me to come on this adventure, after all, I am a hobbit. Surely there are plenty of other souls seeking an adventure like this who have far more talent than I could bestow." "Why you asked for one," Gandalf replied with confusion in his bushy brows. "I am a hobbit, such words would never have come from my mouth." "Clearly you are a Took from where you currently stand," Gandalf replied as he blew a little smoke ring that dodged through a previous smoked big yellow ring that still dwelled in the air. "True that may be, but I do not recall those words." "Well you did, I could see the question in your eyes." Gandalf blew another ring of great size. "Also, Mr. Baggins, you are most fit for this burglar job, if I did not think you were qualified, I, of course, would have not chosen you. Good day Mr. Baggins, we leave tomorrow at sunrise." Bilbo then walked away in confusion as his question was still not answered, or so he thought.
