It is a bright shining jewel that appears to take the light shone upon it and turn it into ten thousand sparks of white radiance shot with glints of the rainbow. Thorin believes it is worth more than a river of gold. 5. Why does Gandalf keep abandoning the group? Answer: Gandalf leaves the group three time for decently long periods of time during the journey. Describe in detail three characters from the story. List reasons why you would or wouldn't want to get to know these individuals. This should be written in two or three paragraphs.
Bilbo Baggins Bilbo Baggins the Hobbit is the main protagonist of the story. As a hobbit, he is inclined to despise adventures and desire to peacefully live in his hobbit hole. Bilbo, hired as a burglar for the adventure to the lonely mountain was a liability at the beginning of the adventure. However, he became an asset once he found his courage and a powerful golden ring which turns it's owner invincible when worn. With Bilbo's new ring, he gained confidence and courage that never would have been even imaginable to be seen in a Hobbit. That confidence and courage combined with the ring ultimately saved the dwarves multiple times. I would want to get to know Bilbo, due to his friendliness, kindness, politeness, and because he is the owner of the ring. Gandalf Gandalf is a wise wizard that accompanies the Dwarves and Bilbo throughout their adventure. Gandalf is a very wise wizard as he proves to be throughout the novel. Gandalf saved the adventurers twice from death. Without Gandalf, the adventurers would not have gone very far in their journey, as Gandalf also provided assistance via his abundance of connections and his wise tactics to gaining assistance. I would want to get to know Gandalf for he is a very wise and powerful wizard whose usefulness in the adventure is greatest. Thorin Oakenshield Thorin Oakenshield is the new king of the dwarves. He is the leader of the expedition to the lonely mountain. Thorin son of Thrain, son of Thror, King under the mountain (Lonely Mountain), is brave and has excellent leadership qualities. However, he, like his fathers have a lust for treasure especially the precious Arkenstone. Once he arrived at the Lonely Mountain, this lust and greed for treasure took the best of him and caused him to make some poor leadership choices. However, at the end of the story, Thorin died in battle as he once again proved himself a terrific and brave leader. I would want to get to know Thorin due to his bravery and his excellent leadership. However, I would not want to know him if he was ever involved in his treasure. Choose two characters from the story and write a conversation they might have. This should be a minimum of two paragraphs.
Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf in the time spent in Rivendell, Bilbo comes across Gandalf sitting among the elf palace smoking his pipe. "Good morning Gandalf!" Bilbo greeted with a smile. "What do you mean this time, do you wish me a good morning today or do -" "All of them at once!" Bilbo hurriedly said. Gandalf's eyes lightened and his lips curled behind his pipe in the midst of blowing a smoke ring. "Well, what is it you want? Surely you did not come solely to greet me." Bilbo could not deny this and began his inquiry, "I wanted to know why you choose me to come on this adventure, after all, I am a hobbit. Surely there are plenty of other souls seeking an adventure like this who have far more talent than I could bestow." "Why you asked for one," Gandalf replied with confusion in his bushy brows. "I am a hobbit, such words would never have come from my mouth." "Clearly you are a Took from where you currently stand," Gandalf replied as he blew a little smoke ring that dodged through a previous smoked big yellow ring that still dwelled in the air. "True that may be, but I do not recall those words." "Well you did, I could see the question in your eyes." Gandalf blew another ring of great size. "Also, Mr. Baggins, you are most fit for this burglar job, if I did not think you were qualified, I, of course, would have not chosen you. Good day Mr. Baggins, we leave tomorrow at sunrise." Bilbo then walked away in confusion as his question was still not answered, or so he thought.
